Comet Geology with Deep Impact Remote Sensing

چکیده
The Deep Impact mission will provide the highest resolution images yet of a comet nucleus. Our knowledge of the makeup and structure of cometary nuclei, and the processes shaping their surfaces, is extremely limited, thus use of the Deep Impact data to show the geological context of the cratering experiment is crucial. This article briefly discusses some of the geological issues of

The shape, topography, and geology of Tempel 1 from Deep Impact observations
Deep Impact images of the nucleus of Comet Tempel 1 reveal pervasive layering, possible impact craters, flows with smooth upper surfaces, and erosional stripping of material. There are at least 3 layers 50–200 m thick that appear to extend deep into the nucleus, and several layers 1–20 m thick that parallel the surface and are being eroded laterally. Circular depressions show geographical varia...

The studied region in this research (Alborz province) is structurally located in Alborz poly_orogenic system of northern Iran. The purpose of this research is combining the remote sensing and geology sciences to show fault lineaments by analyzing satellite data in a vast region and also comparison between lineaments layer and recognized faults in geology maps. Firstly, two scenes of Landsat ETM...
متن کاملDeep Sub-surface Exploration of Cometary Nuclei
The surface regions of cometary nuclei are expected to be extensively modified by cosmic radiation and solar insolation. Induced state changes and associated sublimation and phase-change boundaries are expected to propagate deep into the interior. In the current exploration program a reconnaissance of the highly evolved upper meter of the cometary surface is comprehensively covered. However, th...
متن کاملDeep Impact: a Large-scale Active Experiment on a Cometary Nucleus
The Deep Impact mission will provide the first data on the interior of a cometary nucleus and a comparison of those data with data on the surface. Two spacecraft, an impactor and a flyby spacecraft, will arrive at comet 9P/Tempel 1 on 4 July 2005 to create and observe the formation and final properties of a large crater that is predicted to be approximately 30-m deep with the dimensions of a fo...
متن کاملDiscrimination of Quaternary iron placer deposits by integrating remote sensing band ratio, magnetometry and geology data by weighted overlay index method compared to SAM and FCC methods in 1:100000 sheet of Hamedan
Abstract Quaternary placer deposits are becoming increasingly important. Remote sensing is a very powerful tool in discriminating altered areas related to intrusion deposits, which has significantly reduced the cost and time of exploration. In this study, to identify iron-bearing alluvial zones within the 1:100000 sheet of Hamedan, satellite image processing techniques such as band ratio (BR),...
